There are on occasion television series that for an episode or more will allow one or more characters to go into the futuristic world of "tomorrow."

Sliders - Although traveling to parallel Earths isn't time travel, the characters often did go to worlds more advanced in technology than the world they came from. One notable example is at the end of the third season, "This Slide of Paradise." Quinn and Maggie arrive in a futurescape scene complete with flying futuristic cars.

Honey, I Shrunk The Kids: The TV Show - In the second season episode "Honey, The Future's Comin' Back On Me" a junk-food-eating cyborg named Aleztra travels back from the year 2023 to eliminate Wayne Szalinski. Compounding the situation further members of the underground Szalinski-Nistas are sent from the future to protect Wayne. Frustrated, Aleztra kidnaps Amy and Nick. Wayne and Diane travel to ecologically polluted future to bring their kids back.

Monomyth

The monomyth (a.k.a. "the hero's journey") is an almost universal pattern description found in many narratives from around the Earth. Thoughtless use of monomyths without regard to structure is often blamed for lack of originality and clichés in popular culture.

The monomyth pattern was first described by Joseph Campbell in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Campbell borrowed the term "monomyth" from novelist James Joyce's Finnegans Wake.

Campbell noted that important culture myths which have survived for thousands of years all share a virtually fundamental pattern with a number of stages such as:

A call to adventure, which the hero has to accept or decline
A road of trials, regarding which the hero succeeds or fails
Achieving the goal or "boon", which often results in important self-knowledge
A return to the ordinary world, again as to which the hero can succeed or fail

Applying the boon, in which what the hero has gained can be used to improve the world

For example, in the television series "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century" Buck Rogers is frozen in space during a 1987 shuttle test only to awake nearly 500 years later. This would be the call to adventure. The road of trials and the achievement of the goal is when Buck Rogers must prove to the "good guys" that he is on Earth's side and is accepted by the new Earth government. A return to the ordinary world and using the "boon" is when Rogers is accepted as a member of the Earth Defense Directorate and gets involved in many diplomatic missions on behalf of Earth.

Jetsons

The Jetsons was an animated series that took place in an unspecified future date on Earth.

Labor saving devices and working robots were used as running gags. Such futuristic technologies in the Jetsons universe were the Visaphone (video phone), aerocar (flying car) and the supersonic skate board.

In the Jetson society work weeks are shorter and the planet Venus is a popular tourist spot. Popular dances are the "Saturn Snug," the "Mercury Melt" and the "Borgy Elles Four Bough Belt."

Carl H. Renner

Carl H. Renner was a designer for General Motors.

Renner's "Escacar" (pictured above) was painted in 1945 and is described as a "Unicycle Gyroscopic Rocket Car." The above painting can be found in the book Driving Through Futures Past.
